Dinnertime

Spoons are for babies! One month old puppies eat out of dishes. They definitley do make a mess either way. Rice cereal is still the main course but now there are are some mini puppy kibble mixed into the mush. They think it's yummy. Take a peek and see.

New adventure

Puppies had their first outdoor adventure today. They weren't quite sure about the grass and very quickly climbed back on to the blanket where Momma Jinx was nearby to offer comfort. They will start to go outside every nice day now and it won't be long they will think it's the greatest place in the world.

New digs

The puppies are getting active enough that it was time to move them to their new larger living quarters. They have now moved out of the quiet puppy room and into the kitchen where they will become familiar with all the activities of a normal household. Their new puppy pen is much larger with room to play and stretch their muscles. It also has a potty area, eating area and a cozy cube bed for them to snuggle in.

3-2-1-Action

This is an experiment at posting a video clip. It's nothing fancy, but if it works, there will be more to come.

Water bottle

Now that the puppies are happily eating cereal, we also need to increase their fluid intake and start them drinking water. None of the puppies were quite sure what to do with the water bottle the first few times. By tonight, after several tries, they are now all lapping a little bit. Like with everything, they just need some practice.

Yummmm....

Today was the first day of sampling real food. The menu is pretty simple, rice cereal thinned with goats milk. Everyone dove right in. Made quite a mess, but then Jinx went in afterwards and cleaned every one up.

Guess what's up?

Isn't this the cutest little furry bottom you ever did see? Okay, you may be wondering about the butt shot, but it's pretty exciting. Can you see that Lace has her tail up in the air? What you cannot see is that she is wagging! Yes, Lace is up on her feet and motoring about and she is also wagging her cute little tail. As you know, Jinx has been bring toys to the babies since they were born, so the second picture should come as no surprise. Lace is the first to become enamoured with toys, she thinks they are lots of fun to push over and snuggle up with.
This little Walrus has a rattle inside and is just the right size for young puppies. Lace can't pick it up yet, but it won't be long.

First visitors

This weekend the puppies started having visitors. They have seen an assortment of people, from a teenager to a senior. So far, the only visitors we have allowed are family and friends. Once Jinx is comfortable with her babies being handled by others, then we will be able to socialize them with many visitors, inlcuding children, dogs and cats, and plan some puppy visits with potential families.

Cocoa Surprise

From the moment she was born, we knew Cocoa was a chocolate, and her white markings were also very obvious. Colours and pattern in Havanese sometimes take time to develop. You may not have noticed this in the photos, but we have been watching her colour develop over the past two weeks. As her coat grows, we can now see that Cocoa is a chocolate tricolour. Her dominant colour is chocolate, and her trim is white, but she also has a third colour. She has the typical Tri markings appearing in the way of soft pewter colour points on the eyebrows, inner ears, cheeks and muzzle as well as chest points and a bit of a cuff around the legs. Its hard to take a picture of it, here is the best we have been able to do. You should be able to see the three colours in this photo.

The eyes have it

Onyx eyes are wider open today and the other three have small eye slits. The eyes are here and will continue to open wide over the next few days. Now that the puppies are becoming mobile, we have made a few changes to the puppy area. They have low cushions and beds than they can easily get in and out of. The favourite is a tiger striped snuggle sack. Its warm and cozy and they can all snuggle in together.

Peek A Boo

Almost that is. Today, Onyx has tiny little eye slits and is peeking out at us. Over the day or so, his eyes will open wide. He is the first but the others are likely close behind.

Milestone day

We knew it was a milestone day this morning, when first thing, I caught Casper crawling out of the bed to go pee further away. Mom has been keeping them clean, but now they are able to start eliminating on their own. Puppies naturally want to keep their beds clean. This is the beginning of housebreaking. Now, as of today, they have a potty pad outside their bed. They will probably all start using it very soon.

That was just the beginning. Just before supper, Cocoa took her very first steps. Onyx followed just a few minutes behind. Within half an hour, Lace and Casper were up as well. Very wobbly and unsteady, but they are taking a few steps at a time with their whole bodies off the ground. Babies are learning to walk.

Trying hard

We are still waiting for eyes to open. That should happen any day now. At the same time, the puppies are also almost ready to take thier first steps. All of them can lift their bodies, both front and rear, just not quite coordinated enough to do it at the same time yet. That may also happen within the next day or two. Here is Lace. It may be hard to see in the picture, but she has her whole front off the ground and is trying hard to push her rear up as well. she may be the first to walk. We'll see soon.

Double Take

In a quick glance in the puppy room this morning, it looked like we suddenly had 5 puppies. But no, it is simply Jinx bringing in yet another new toy for the babies. This one is a leopard spotted bone, just the same size as the puppies. Another of her favourites. The puppies seem to like it too.

Onyx - 1 week old

Onyx is almost the same size as Casper and weighs 316g. He is the hardest one to take pictures of as he is so active and wiggly. He is never still very long.

Cocoa - 1 week old

Cocoa is almost the same weight as Lace at 280g. Both our girls are sweet as can be.

Lace - 1 week old

At one week old, Lace weighs 278 g. She is pretty and sweet but does not let her bigger brothers boss her around.

Casper - 1 week old

Casper started out the smallest, but in no time at all was the largest. He still is. but not by much, only 2 grams more than Onxy. The boys are very even in size. At one week old, Casper weighs 318g.

One week old

One week old. It's hard to believe but the babies have almost doubled in size already. Casper already has doubled and the others are not far behind. The weights at one week are very uniform, with the boys being almost identical , and the girls matching but about an ounce less.
Individual pictures coming up next

6 days old

Puppies are growing by leaps and bounds. Everyone is healthy and thriving. Jinx is an attentive Mom. Puppies are so wiggly that its hard to get good pictures of them, but we'll keep trying.

Cuddly soft

Here are the babies all snuggled in for a nap. 4 days old. Aren't they adorable? We think so.
The nose pigment is starting to develop on everyone and should be dark soon. Everyone is doing well.

Day 3

Everyone is growing well and gaining weight every day. Each litter has a greedy little piglet, and Capser is ours. He has already put on two ounces. Although he was the smallest at birth, today he is the largest. Size is still all relative. Toy breed babies are small! Just to put things in persepctive, here is Lace next to an every day item you all know.

Puppies just had their nails trimmed today for the first time. The little nails are dagger sharp and were starting to abrade Jinx belly when puppies are nursing. This is just the beginning of grooming care they will be exposed to in the next several weeks.

Onyx and Fox

We had planned to wait till about 2-3 weeks to introduce toys so the puppies' eyes would be open and they would be walking about; however, Jinx has her own ideas. She is toy crazy and has decided on her own that 2 days is not too soon to introduce toys. She brought one of her favourite toys for the babies. It's a large unstuffed fox. Now, whenever she leaves the box for any reason or when the babies are just having naps, we can find them cuddled in with Mr Fox. Daddy Joker is wild about toys too, so pretty much a given that all these puppies may be very toy oriented.

One day old

Jinx is being an awsome Mom. Babies are all doing well. Everyone gained weight today, and now they look plump and sleek. Coats are nice and shiny, only about 1/4 inch long right now, but they are ever so soft and feel like velvet. Our babies have temporary call names for the next 10 to 12 weeks that they will live with us. Our pretty little cream girl is LACE. Her look-alike twin, the cream boy is CASPER. The lovely chocolate girl just had to be COCOA, and the tricolour male is ONYX.
